Radiologist and Photographer

My name is Chris Bedford and welcome to my imagination. My passion for fine art photography began after moving to Los Angeles in the summer of 2018 for my first real job as a radiologist.
But let me back up a bit.
I was born in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1984 and raised in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. After completing medical school and internship in 2013, I moved to Houston for radiology residency for four years. Then I lived in San Francisco for a year of fellowship at UCSF. Over 10 years of training, I have developed a specific skill set. Being able to zero in on abnormalities within the human body seen on a variety of imaging modalities. We all look the same on the inside…for the most part. There is symmetry and asymmetry, lines and shapes, fluids and solids, tubes and bags, and a spectrum of shades and densities. Little did I know that this medical training would help me with photography and becoming an artist.
I finally move to Los Angeles, California – the city I’ve always dreamed of living in. In this grand new land where I’ve aspired for so long to be a part of, I feel compelled to explore and discover its hidden gems. Determined to unearth the pipe dream that has decidedly become my new reality, I ironically retreat into a grandiose dream world –my imagination, a place of abundant vitality. I view this harsh new terrain through my unique looking glass to see wild and marvelous creatures, foreboding beseechers and otherwordly features. A place where the ordinary becomes extraordinary.
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” Elliot Erwitt, 1928
